About Garbh Sanskar

The literal meaning of garbh sanskar is educating the fetus in the womb. Many parents found this interesting and felt quite satisfied too. In Indian culture it is believed that education of real and traditional values and parenting starts right from the time the fetus is confirmed in the womb. This is why when anyone gets pregnant in home, the elder people advice to have positive thoughts and emotions to the pregnant woman.

In the Hindu epic, Mahabharata, there was a warrior named Abhimanyu who is said to have learnt a war skill when he was in the womb of her mother. He could only learn to decode and enter the trap because by that time her mother felt asleep. This was one of the reasons why he was killed because he did not know how to come out of the trap.

The popularity of garbh sanskar is also because researchers have proved its relevance and importance in the development of the child. In Indian culture and especially in Hinduism it is believed that education of material, traditional and spiritual values starts right from the time the fetus is formed in the womb. Science has proved that baby in the womb can learn from initial stages. Mother’s bond with the child starts right from the time of conception. It is not after the child is born. The baby listens to the mother and feels her feelings even when it is developing in the womb. This is why it is important to transfer positive thoughts, positive energies and the emotions to the baby (and to the pregnant woman herself). The mother can shape up baby’s first impressions by listening to good music, reading material that stimulates positive thinking, meditating, doing yoga and much more. The positive thinking and attitude promotes physical wellbeing of the mother and the baby throughout the pregnancy and after. The advantages of garbh sanskar are not only that you educate your child but there is development of a bond between the mother and the child.


Garbh Sanskar in spiritual view:

Garbh sanskar is an opportunity to impart spiritual thoughts in the baby right from the time of conception. In this view, the garbh sanskar should be directed towards raising the sattva guna (or good qualities and positive thinking in the material sense) to achieve the ultimate goal of reducing the desires within an individual. In simple words garbh sanskar should be used to impart the seed of future spiritual knowledge and interests in the baby.

What kind of knowledge to be imparted to the little brain:

It is a spiritual sense rather than the material sense. In our view there is nothing specific about what should be done, but in simplistic way the mother should do anything and everything (according to her interests) that will pass on the "guna" (collection of qualities) that she wants the baby to have more (obviously that can only be Sattva gun for any mother or parents)...Examples of what can be done - Religious reading, meditation, yoga, seva (service) at religious places, charity work and everything else that can be done to pass on the spiritual (religious) thoughts to the baby.

Most of the people want the baby to be intelligent and materialistically prosperous etc...In that case the mother can do the things that can help improve the qualities like positive thinking, inspiration and more...but in our view material thing are ultimately im-material (matter very little in the long run) our view is more on the religious lines towards every individual facing the God in the long run.


Also, while doing these efforts we need to be within practical limits and not do excess of one type of thought...because excess of anything can be ultimately harmful....and many times can not change the course of life (in fact it can create imbalances). All Sanskars are like Vastushastra (they individually carry not more than 10 % to 15% of the strength in the life)...It is the consistency of the efforts and thinking/actions over several lives that will open the door to the God for the human life. In case of Vastushastra, it is said that, even if you build a perfect home with all vastu rules, still the happiness mostly depends on the thoughts, actions (karma) and qualities (gunas) of the individuals living inside...If they are Tamasik or Rajasik, the perfect vastu cannot change the course of the life of the people living within. So vastu can change only 10-15% of the overall course of the way life progresses (but that is not a small achievement though), hence the need for balance of actions and thoughts in the life. Ultimate success comes when all such small actions come together and lead an individual to the higher goal in the life - highest level of sattva guna.

This offers a list of guidelines for would-be parents. This aim of any parent is to bear and nurture a healthy, capable child who can face the pressures of our increasingly complex lifestyles. An Ayurvedic solution to this situation has slowly gained momentum — a process called Garbha Sanskar.

Garbha Sanskar is both a medical practice and a 'culture'. Just like a person brought up in a musician's house imbibes a musical culture, the child is conditioned within the womb. The practice has been developed over four decades of research and medical practice.

What Garbha Sanskar involves
Traditional diet planning, the use of herbal preparations, yoga, music, behavioural suggestions, and ayurvedic medicines are all used in harmony. The idea is to enhance every aspect of the mother's life. Ideally, preparations should start at least a year before conception. Garbha Sanskar covers pregnancy, childbirth and guides parents until the child is two years old. Parents who have followed these instructions say their babies are able to hold their heads up, turn on their side and begin speaking earlier than other babies. They sleep soundly for several hours and have far fewer health concerns than their peers. In some cases, they show extra-ordinary development.

Preparing for conception in Garbha Sanskar
A healthy diet and lifestyle is recommended so the couple achieves peak physical and psychological health. The reproductive cells are the most potent cells in the body and need special nourishment, so health tonics such as panchamrut, are vital. Seminal fluids are also an indicator of the health of reproductive cells. If either partner suffers from deficiencies of any kind, an Ayurvedic Pancha Karma is recommended before conception. The process aims to cleanse the body of toxins. Its therapies lubricate the body internally and use techniques to expel toxins naturally. This is followed by therapy for specific problems as individually required.

During pregnancy
Ancient descriptions of foetal development are surprisingly accurate. A month-by-month diet that supports every development, and health tonics are advised to keep up strength and provide essential nutrients. Yoga and oiling the body is a must. Use oil that is cultured with herbs such as bala, sahachar and ashwagandha to reduce stretch marks and prevent breasts from sagging.

Several food and behavioural precautions are listed for the mother. Mixing fruit and milk can be particularly harmful, as it causes allergies in the baby. Around the fourth month, the mother will experience food cravings. These are to be adequately satisfied and sensitively treated, as they are the cravings of the foetus and will help it develop better.


Music therapy in Garbha Sanskar

The use of healing music is the most important aspect of Garbha Sanskar. It is well-known that music or sound vibration reaches the baby in the womb. It has a soul and recognises values. The baby can be cultured, especially through certain mantras and music found in the Indian tradition. But this does not necessarily work with any singing voice. Only certain voices will exhibit the ability to be penetrating and actually reach the child in the womb and help shape its mind. The choice of music to be heard during pregnancy is also important. The Rig, Sama and Yajur Veda mantras promote a healthy pregnancy, good growth of the parts of the body, and stimulate the development of the sense organs, respectively. After childbirth, the music serves to calm the child. Babies find it enjoyable and are able to sleep comfortably with its help.

Childbirth and childcare
Garbha Sanskar favours a natural delivery. It holds that this is far less traumatic for the baby, compared to the shock of sudden exposure to the outside environment through caesarean section. Exercises and external applications during labour facilitate a simple and less painful delivery.

Some of the essential steps after delivery include oiling the baby's fontanel (homemade ghee can be used), and feeding it a touch of goldinfused honey to boost nervous system activity.

The mother regains her strength through an easily digestible and nutritious diet, and loses excess weight through basic yoga. The date powder, shatavari kalpa and dhatri rasayan must be continued to help the production of good and adequate breast milk.

Some guidelines for childcare
- Until the child is two years old, it needs regular oil massages to help growth
- While he or she can start eating other food after it is six months old, it must be breast fed until it is a year old
- Do not place the baby's bed under direct light
- Avoid loud and disturbing noises » Introduce new foods gradually, and allow the baby to start eating by itself at a certain age even if it creates a mess

Diet considerations
How to make panchamrut
Panchamrut, meaning 'the five nectars', is a traditional, extremely nourishing recipe. It provides general strength, boosts potency, improves immunity and vitalises the brain. It should be eaten every day, preferably in the morning, on an empty stomach.

In a cup, add in the following order (serves 1) 1 tsp curd (not yogurt) 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp honey 2 tsp ghee 7-8 teaspoons milk (full fat, boiled and cooled) Mix well before eating

Pre-conception foods
For potential parents, almonds, panchamrut and chyanvanprash are essential.

Food during pregnancy
- Apart from a balanced vegetarian diet, iron and calcium are most important for a pregnant woman. She should consume milk, Ayurvedic ghee and fresh juices of sweet seasonal fruits
- Calcium can be ingested through dry dates, traditional dink (Gum acacia) ladoos and poppy seeds
- For iron and folic acid, eat black raisins, figs, saffron, spinach, pomegranate and apples

Foods suggested for every month
1st month: Milk at room temperature sipped throughout the day
2nd month: A cup of milk with a spoon of shatavari kalpa twice a day, before sunset
3rd month: Mix one teaspoon of ghee and ½ teaspoon of honey in a cup of room temperature milk. Drink every morning
4th month: Over the day, eat 10 gms of homemade butter (white)
5th month: Ingest six to seven teaspoons of ghee over the day
6th & 7th month: 1 teaspoon of ghee cultured with sweet herbs every morning. This should be prepared by an Ayurvedic doctor
8th month: One bowl of kheer with breakfast or lunch. Can be made with rice, semolina, wheat, or seviya
9th month: No specific diet. Regular intake of milk and ghee

Post delivery diet

Khichdi, light soups, dal and rice, bhakri and chapati. Ahleev (garden cress) kheer. Lightly prepared vegetables. No gravies. No oil and minimal spices until the child is being breastfed. Drink warm water instead of room temperature water throughout the day.
